Which Type of Paint Finish is Right for a Bathroom?
Finding the right paint finish for a bathroom is a balancing act. It needs to be easily cleanable. You probably want it to look fresh and stylish. And the big ask? It needs to withstand moisture. (Hellooo, steamy, stress-releasing showers!)
Which paint finish is perfect for your bathroom? First, let’s look at the 5 options you’re likely to encounter in your search…
5 Paint Finish Options
Flat Finish: Flat finish paint has the least amount of shine, but it provides the most coverage of any other paint, which means fewer coats to cover imperfections. However, flat finish is the least durable type of paint and is not cleanable or wipeable, soooo it’s best for surfaces that are rarely touched, like ceilings. Not your bathroom walls.
Eggshell Finish: Eggshell is a low-sheen paint finish and is more durable for low- to medium-traffic areas, like living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways. We specify eggshell finish for most interior walls throughout the home.
Satin Finish: Satin finish paint has a medium sheen and is easier to clean, making it a good fit for high-traffic areas, like kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. It is also more resistant to moisture.
Semi-Gloss Finish: This finish is shiny and reflective, which is why we only typically specify semi-gloss for trim and cabinets. It is more durable and moisture-resistant, so it’s also a suitable option for bathrooms and other moisture prone areas.
High-Gloss Finish: The shiniest finish available, high-gloss is also the most durable and washable, making it great for doors, trim, and cabinetry. However, we typically don’t specify it for entire walls, as it makes the space feel too bright.
