This modern coastal kitchen renovation in Harvest Hills was for the loveliest, zen client from California. In fact, she lived in the same CA town that I did and on the same street as my husband! We didn’t know each other, but fast forward a decade, and we connected by chance here in Texas. Wild, right?!
I’m so happy we did. Not only because she & her family are wonderful people, but because transforming Texas-style homes into relaxed, modern oases is what I LOVE. (It’s no wonder California clients keep finding us!)
We designed her family’s entire kitchen & nearby beverage area. But before we dive in, take a look at how it started…
Before: Texas-Style Kitchen Ready for Renovation
This is one of the better “before” kitchens we’ve seen. It offered ample space for us to play with, and the general footprint worked, which meant we didn’t need to move utilities. However, the style and functionality was definitely dated: short and traditional cabinets, shallow island seating (where bruised knees were the daily special), dark porcelain tile, etc.
After listening to the family’s lifestyle and aesthetic preferences — relaxed, modern, & Malibu-inspired — we pulled together a design concept that better fit their needs. We also consulted on the project while they renovated with their general contractor, helping everything come together smoothly.
Their new kitchen is finally complete, and I have to say… it’s spectacular! Come on in.
After: Modern Coastal Kitchen Where Sand Meets Sea
Wow, right?! This kitchen is now a breath of fresh air, with moody sea-gray tones, natural rift sawn white oak, tinted glass pendants (reminiscent of sea glass!), textured chairs, and minimal pops of black for contrast. Who wouldn’t want to spend time here now?
Also, this rectangular mega island is seriously HUGE. We designed it to make much better use of the space, to bring family and friends together, and to look naturally elegant with thick, waterfall edges. I seriously can’t get enough of it. OH, and no more bruised knees!
The interior of the kitchen also has a lot to love. We designed custom cabinetry, a unique range hood, & made the most of the really funky angle at the end. Although it looks fairly square, that corner was a triangle that posed a whole host of problems. We used lots of design trickery to make it work!
Not to be missed, would you check out that countertop stone? The veining is subtle yet intriguing & perfectly balances warm and cool. Fun Fact: It reminded us both of the San Francisco Bay! (Anyone who has driven over the bridge knows the exact warm shade of gray I’m talking about…)
Custom Kitchen Features to Drool Over
I bet you didn’t see this coming — TWO dishwashers! Perfect for post-dinner cleanup: one kid loads & the other unloads. Easy! The upper cabinets also have a special surprise… We extended this sleek, custom vent hood to include pop-up cabinets for storage & added under-cabinet task lighting. Truly great design always has purpose.
The Beverage Center & Bar Area
The family’s beverage center (with a must-have wine fridge for Mom & Dad) is located outside of the kitchen, allowing their kids or guests to serve themselves without getting underfoot. For the design, we wanted this space to stay light & bright, but we also knew that it needed contrast to stand on its own.
We designed custom cabinetry in rift sawn white oak to match the kitchen & added design diversity with a unique backsplash. This variegated charcoal color creates depth and is the perfect moody backdrop for stylish accessories. By the way… did you notice that the tiles are a similar shape to the glass pendants over the island? Design magic. 😉
An Airy Breakfast Nook & Pet Love
Noodles the Kitty simply couldn’t stay away during our photoshoot! Though it was probably because she loved the camera, I’m going to chock it up to her love of her new space. We were also greeted by the family’s cute pup, Winston, who popped onto the scene while we were documenting their breakfast nook.
The nook itself sits in front of the island and window, providing another beautiful space for gathering and enjoying the view. We chose a modern table for this space with a thick top, sleek modern chairs, & a billowy light fixture that feels perfectly breezy.
A Special Bonus Room…
Like many of our clients, this family also wanted to renovate a bathroom. But, unlike the kitchen, they didn’t think it needed a designer’s touch or a high investment. They just wanted smart and beautiful materials selections that they could hand over to their GC for implementation.
This EXACT scenario is why we created our Sourced Design Kits two years ago, & this family purchased one — Willow!
P.S. In case you haven’t heard of our Renovation Design Kits before, they contain our pre-curated selection of materials and specifications for lighting, hardware, tile, accessories, and more. Simply purchase the kit, choose the options you love most, and let your GC do the rest. Foolproof!
That’s exactly what this family did, and it turned out perfectly…
Stunning, right?! Willow combines the restorative zen of a day spa with the natural bliss of nature. Striped wall tile, brass hardware, and a sleek black mirror create interest and durability, while veined shower tiles and stone pebble floors add a kiss of the outdoors. Talk about a success story!
