It’s no secret — we LOVE breathing fresh, modern vibes into homes that inspire our clients to exhale. But… I am especially excited to share this living room design with you today because it’s yet another project that feels so unique!
We’ve done Modern Coastal, Modern Mountain, & even Modern Boho. This project, we’re naming “Modern Elegant,” which is what happens when classic style meets modern-day freshness. Our clients, a lovely couple with older teens, were eager for an upscale family room designed for cozy family time & casual entertaining.
Before: Living Room in Morningside
This family’s original living room presented a few distinct challenges. First, there were SO MANY doors! With two doorways entering the space from the left & three doors leading outside to the right, the flow of traffic through this room was insane.
Naturally, this family struggled to furnish their space — they didn’t know where to put everything, & I don’t blame them! So, in addition to requesting a new layout, they asked for furnishings in performance fabrics (for their dogs, of course) and our help giving their mostly traditional space a modern facelift.
After: Modern & Elegant Living Room Design
Whoa! — this is a whole different room now, isn’t it?! The biggest change we made is very clearly that back wall. Before, there was an extended fireplace with niches to the left & right. We took that empty space and filled it with custom millwork instead!
Now, there are beautiful shelves for books & accessories, lower cabinets for storage, a stylish mantel, and brass art lights to make the whole space pop.
Take a few steps back and you’ll notice warm, metallic bronze wallpaper on the ceiling. Its subtle texture adds elegance and coziness to the space. We layered it at the back of the bookcase, too, making the whole room feel warm & luxe. When clients trust our vision and have a healthy budget, the space really does look, and most importantly, feel, next level.
To our happy surprise, we were actually able to preserve the original fireplace stone & box! The stone itself has great detail with earthy tones to it — like golds, charcoal and grays, & touches of mossy green. This stone inspired our choice of bronze wallpaper, in addition to the palette we created for the rest of the room.
Oh, & do you see that millwork detail around the surround and the cabinetry? Every inch of it was designed to precision by us. Stunning! Okay, now let’s make a 180-degree turn and take a look at the seating area…
This angle is SO much better, too. Instead of a floating sofa in the middle of the room, we selected a sectional that hugs the walls. In fact, we chose a sofa footprint with the most amount of space possible — and the walls were designed around it! We also closed off a door so that foot traffic will flow exactly where we want it to.
For the design itself, we chose a moody gray performance fabric for the sofa, custom art from local talent Paige Holland, & painted the doors black for added drama. We also designed custom board and batten for the wall to create a dimension & elegance, perfectly matching the luxe feel of the room. It’s refined meets cozy!
Not to be missed, this absolutely drool-worthy ottoman was a luxe splurge that elevates the feel of the whole room. Oftentimes, creating a luxurious feel isn’t about having flash or even hitting a certain price point. It’s about quality materials & craftsmanship. Even if you don’t know why it’s luxe, your eyes can see the difference. Hello, ultimate footrest!
Here’s an added surprise… we designed a few more spaces, too! We wouldn’t normally design a hallway, foyer, or powder room as a standalone project, but our clients requested it as part of their living room design — & we said yes!
Shown on the left, the foyer sets the tone for the home with our clients’ custom art & antiques, styled by us. On the right, you can see a peek of the hallway just outside of their living room. With a sleek black console, brass lighting, books, & art, it’s the perfect “bridge” between this space and the living room.
& by the way… did you spy the peek of wallpaper in the back…?
It’s a powder room! We carried the wallpaper out of the bathroom and into the niche in the hall for an added peek-a-boo effect. It tempts the family — & their guests — to step inside for a look. There, they’ll find big wow, with designer wallpaper, chic lighting, and elegant touches that match this family’s sense of classic style. It’s truly one of a kind!
Most importantly, our clients have told us, “We are loving our new rooms!” & that’s what it’s all about.
